What is a mountain bike or MTB?

MTB or Mountain Bikes are a type of bicycle specifically designed for use on uneven and mountainous terrain. Unlike a road bike, a MTB is built with specialized suspension and geometry, ideally suited to withstand the added stress of off-road riding, as well as offering greater rider comfort and control in more demanding conditions.

On MTB bikes the rider's position is more upright and relaxed, providing greater comfort and control on technical terrain. The wheels of a MTB are also wider and have a lower profile that facilitates traction and stability on uneven surfaces.

What types of MTB are there?

There are several types of MTB bikes, each designed for different kinds of terrain and activities:

  • Cross Country (XC) Bikes: Cross Country bikes are light, efficient uphill, and fast on smoother terrain.

  • Trail Bikes: Trail bikes are designed for a wide range of terrain and conditions, making them a great choice for riders looking for versatility.

  • Enduro Bikes: Enduro bikes are ideal for riders who want to conquer the toughest and most technical descents, but still need to be efficient on the climb.

  • Downhill Bikes: Downhill bikes are the heaviest and most robust of the MTB bikes. They have full suspension, big tires and a very relaxed geometry, making them ideal for technical descents and high-speed jumps.

  • Fat bikes: Fat bikes have extremely wide tires, making them perfect for riding on soft and snowy terrain. They are often used for winter expeditions as well as adventure races.

What sizes of mountain bikes are there?

Mountain bikes come in different sizes, which are based on the rider's height and inseam length. The most common sizes are:

  • XS: for people with a height of 1.45 m to 1.57 m

  • S: for people with a height of 1.55 m to 1.67 m

  • M: for people with a height of 1.65 m to 1.77 m

  • L: for people with a height of 1.75 m to 1.87 m

  • XL: for people with a height of 1.85 m to 1.97 m

However, it is important to note that these are only approximate ranges, so the final choice of bike size will depend on personal preference, riding style, and the frame geometry of the particular bike.
